Choosing the soroban
Developed in Japan, the soroban was based on the Chinese abacus. The Japanese abacus improves upon the Chinese abacus by removing 2 beads per row that are unnecessary for calculations with decimal numbers.
For the child, this is preferable as it eliminates two unnecessary elements for performing these calculations. Additionally, it prevents them from being tempted to use these beads for carrying over and developing bad habits.
A fantastic learning tool
Still widely used today and increasingly successful in education, the Japanese abacus is a very effective tool for helping children learn mathematics.
Mathematics can seem abstract to children and difficult to grasp; using the soroban provides a concrete physical representation of calculations, greatly enhancing understanding.
Beyond mathematics
By its nature, the soroban helps develop a child’s coordination. Thus, using the soroban is both a mental and kinesthetic exercise, allowing your child to develop dexterity.
With practice, using the soroban helps prevent errors and becomes very rewarding, potentially giving a boost to their self-confidence.
